Situated between the Banks and the mainland, Manteo and Roanoke Island distinguish themselves from the rest of the area with their immense history that has branched off many different folk tales. These tales and stories spread throughout our nation, as young boys dream of commanding a gang of pirates and searching for treasure as the infamous pirate Blackbeard did. Elementary schools put on reproductions of the first colony and study the mysteries behind their disappearance. This reproduction of our past reinforces our cultural uniqueness and reminds us of where we began. Colonial Williamsburg, in Virginia, offers American's a glimpse into the first English Colony and our struggle to gain what we now hold so dear - our freedom. Much of it began in Manteo and Roanoke Island. It is the birthplace of Virginia Dare, a favorite treasure cove for Blackbeard and where America established some set freedoms. Recreations of these vital moments are preformed in the outdoor theatre on Roanoke Island every night throughout the summer. The celebration of our birth with music and dance helps keep alive the importance of such beginnings.

Manteo seems a hub for artists and art lovers alike. Galleries, studios and even some local stores and cafes proudly display the works and designs of local artists. In addition to the art galleries, the architecture throughout showcases turn of the century Victorian and Colonial homes. The natives have always protected the history of this area and shy away from creating a commercialized environment as they continue to preserve the area and its early American roots. Andy Griffith and his wife reside here and since the early 1950's have helped provide financial and inspiration help to the Lost Colony Drama to propel it as an icon in American entertainment. A perfect place to travel for vacation or just a short trip, the area will truly bring out the patriotism in all who call America their country.
