The quaint seaside village of Southport channels a different time with 200-year-old live oaks whose branches overhang the cobblestone streets in the historic downtown area. With homes that have stood the test of time for more than a century, the area's southern charm and home town feel offer many a unique perspective into a storybook. It's no wonder movie studios have used Southport as the backdrop in different films. While strolling down the streets it's as if you are turning a page back to a simpler time, where even unfamiliar faces say hello with sincerity and warmth.
Many antique stores and art galleries offer a forum for artists of the past and present to showcase their work. Enjoy the lobster bisque at one of the waterfront restaurants, or for a more exotic cuisine, sample the coconut soup at Thai Peppers. Visit Waterfront Park and take the Riverwalk trail along the coastal area where three major bodies of water meet: the Intracoastal Waterway, Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. The trail also provides a perfect view of the area's two lighthouses from a distance, the Oak Island Lighthouse and the Bald Head Island Lighthouse, "Old Baldy."
If you're lucky enough to have already planned your vacation in this seaside village for the Fourth of July, you are in for a treat. Southport puts on one of the largest festivals honoring our independence. For four days enjoy music, hundreds of vendors ranging from arts and crafts to face painting and tons of tasty treats for even the pickiest eater. Then watch the beautiful fireworks display as the lights are reflected over the water. Travel to Southport for a vacation full of sun, sand and exploration.
