Review Guidelines
Basic Review Guidelines:

Your review should focus on specific aspects of the business you are reviewing. Do not simply state you liked or disliked the business - be specific.

The best reviews include not only whether you liked or disliked a business' products or service, but also why.

DO NOT TYPE IN ALL CAPS!

Do not mention competing company names in your reviews. Focus on the company you are reviewing, and if you wish, leave a review about the other companies on their directory listings.

Do not comment on other reviews - respect their position and write your own, but do not argue with others.

Do not use profanity or post spiteful remarks.

Do not write a review that is less than 50 words in length. The goal of a review is to share your experiences with a particular company - very short reviews do not accomplish this.

Do not post phone numbers, email addresses or URLs.

Do not post inflammatory reviews - stop and put yourself in the shoes of the owner of the business you are posting about.

Do not post many reviews about one business. Doing this will cause all of your reviews to be deleted.

Remember, you are responsible for your words.

Scrumptious...

My sister recommended the Sugar Shack for dinner. We went our first night for a quick dinner and back another night for crab legs, shrimp, and hush puppies. The food was great and reasonably priced! Thanks Lasea Days for the idea. I'm going back in July for more.

yes the sugar shack hasn't been on the obx long, and the staff for the most part are young (everyone has a bad apple or 2)but everything is as fresh as can be had on this beach and if by some off the wall chance your food is over cooked it is 9 times out because the staff is extremely busy. prices may be high but there is not a better selection anywhere on the outer banks, not just fresh/raw but steamed and fried.so regardless of what some of he so called crab experts say noone know blue crabs better than those native to the outer banks

Delicious
By Seafood Lover on 3/4/2008
Had a fantastic lunch there today. Ordered a bowl of clam chowder while I waited for my fried shrimp boat. There were a lot of clams in it too, which was a plus. Enjoyed those plump shrimp which came with shack chips & cole slaw. All very delicious. Will be going back to enjoy the food & the view.

Pleased OBX Local
By Seafood Lover on 2/20/2008
My husband & I stopped in the other day to check things out. We've lived here for twenty years. Have never been but my first impression was the market's fresh smell & cleanliness. Immediately the staff acknowledged our presence and stated, ''ask if we can assist in any way''. We were impressed with the seafood case. The color of the fish, the set up etc was beautiful. We tested the knowledge of the staff by asking a few questions regarding certain fish and the freshness of it. My husband is a commercial fisherman so he knows his seafood. Needless to say, the answers the staff gave were right on the money. They are knowledgable. Whether they look young or are young, you should never judge a book by it's cover. They work there for a reason. So, we ended up ordering two steamer buckets to go for us & our family. We eat seafood all the time & it was wonderful, not to mention an easy cleanup. I do recommend this seafood market. There's no other like it on the outer banks. We will be back again & can't wait to sit outside this spring/summer/fall to enjoy a beautiful sunset outside with delicious, fresh local seafood & a cold beer! They do serve wine too for you wine lovers.

young employ
By sugar crack on 2/8/2008
the young employees are some of the best people i have ever met and they serviced me and my family well. i have to say that the seafood to-go is awesome. they prepared my daughters food extremely well. The thing about Maryland is that they overfished the Chesapeake Bay years ago, and they think the crabs that they buy in their markets are from their waters. when in all actuality they are North Carolina crabs that we sell to them. So who knows more about crabs, and doesn't brag about it? North Carolinians! If you want good crabs, stay in Maryland buy them there and stay the hell off of the Outer Banks!

The Sugar Shack and everybody that works there are very friendly !!

The Tarheel is a must!
By Guest on 1/2/2008
Ordered the Tarheel, which is about $90.00. It is a low country broil that can easily feed 5. Blue crab, corn, red scallion potatos, crawfish, shrimp, sausage. They were out of the blue crab, so they gave us snow crab, which is more expensive, but they didn't charge extra. Preparing the Tarheel is super easy. Just add 2 cups of water to the bucket that they provide, wait until the bucket starts to steam. Let steam for 20 min, and you are good to go. Great idea for a small get together. Had some fried wahoo on a different occassion, and was very pleased. They had a wonderful curry type jelly for the fish. Highly reccommend this place for a quick lunch, or to pick up some seafood to prepare at the house.

Good food with Great customer service
By Guest on 12/27/2007
I have to disagree with the previous reviews. Yes, the staff is young but most seem to know what they are doing. As far as the crabs go, i ordered half a bushel and came to pick them up half an hour later, and i must say that they are some of the best crabs I've ever eaten.

Hasn't yet reached its potential!
By an NCBeaches Guest on 9/6/2007
Place has potential, but it isn't great yet. The crabcake sandwich and ''to go'' plates of other seafood are good. But for the price you pay you could be enjoying them in the dining room of the restaurant next-door. Like another reviewer wrote â€" the steamed crabs were very overdone and mushy. I waited for mine to be cooked, so the excuse the other customer was given about delays on picking them up couldn't be used. It was a shame to do that to #1 Jimmys that were purchased at #1 prices!

The young staff needs some supervision and experience. A lot of that is available next-door at the restaurant. So, maybe things will improve.

no customer service

Talk about carolina southern charm... NOT! Seafood to go really means customers to go with poor customer service -- no sugar at the sugar shack. Customer beware of shark attacks by the two legged staffers!

Don't go -- you will be disappointed!
By Guest on 8/3/2007
The best part about this restaurant is the gazebo that sits out on the sound. My first (and last) experience at this restaurant was horrible! We ordered a ½ bushel of crab at 3:30 pm and picked them up about an hour later. They were all so mushy and overcooked we could not eat them. When we called to complain and ask for a refund, we were told it was our fault the crabs were overcooked because we waited too long to come and pick them up. We couldn't believe it! We are from Maryland and we get crabs all the time. Sometimes we even wait until the next day to eat them and it doesn't make a difference. The manager told us that he was busy and did not have time to deal with our complaint after which he abruptly hung up. We will never go there again and will tell all of our friends and family not to patronize this establishment. If you are in the seafood business, you should know how to steam crabs without them getting mushy.
