The Tale of the Whale Restaurant, located on the Nags Head-Manteo Causeway, offers casual dining mixed with great views of the Roanoke Sound. Seafood, prime rib, pastas and steaks are menu favorites at Tale of the Whale. This great restaurant has been family owned and operated on the Outer Bnaks for 27 years.

I will be sure to recommend this restaurant to anyone that frequents the OBX area. The foos was fantastic. Fried shrimp, clams, crab cakes, stuffed flounder, everything was delicious. Server was pleasant anf attentive to our needs. It was good to see that it was clearly a child friendly place or can be a romantic evening for just couples. All around, the best food we had all vacation. Will be back!

We came, intending to have the early bird special, but we narrowly missed it. We waited at their gazebo. Even though it was a cool, damp, evening, it was nice to be so close to the Sound. The inside had nice, nautical decor that made you feel like you were on a ship. The menu is your traditional seafood restaurant fare, but the portions are especially big. Everyone who dined with me had enough leftovers for tommorow. Their bread is very delicious, and the salads are very fresh, and the best I have have had in awhile. Their seafood combination platter, came with three fish: classic salmon, mahi-mahi, and wahoo for something a little different. It was all topped in a creamy sauce with lump crab meat. I especially loved their garlic mashed potatoes, which were blended with some sort of green herb.

We always go to the early bird dinners for great value. The food is excellent - especially the coconut shrimp! The girls and guys who wait on us are very friendly and do their job well. It's especially nice to visit there every summer and see many of the same faces! We love sitting in a booth by the window for the view but all seats are fine. You won't be disappointed if you try the Whale!

May have to wait upwards of 45 minutes after 6:00pm but cabana w/entertainment is nice. One of my top four favorite places.

The service is great and the views are too. I highly recommend the crab bisque soup, it is wonderful, as is all of the other food. You should make an effort to stop and eat here when in Nags Head.

We were VERY disapointed in our last visit. It took a few visits to the TOEW to finally realize that they discriminate against families with children. The best seats (w/ views of the water) went to older clientel and childless couples. Families with young children get placed in the large ''rumpus room'' with all the rowdy customers. Additionally, our visit to TOEW was further ruined by the over-cooked pasta and seafood. Our daughter flatly refused to eat her pasta. My wife's fried shrimp dinner was vulcanized by over frying. Overall, the food was bland and tasteless. By the time I reached the end of my dinner, I was experiencing a gag-reflex. I assume it was due to the overuse of MSG on the food.
Sadly to say, TOEW will not be on my dinner schedule for my next visit to OBX. I wish I had gone back to Awful Arthur's again. They know seafood there!!

They usually run pre-evening specials too, so if you can eat early, then you'll save money. Their food is delicious. The service is wonderful. The views are great. If you eat at only one place, then be sure and eat here.
