| Value: | | Service: | | | | A Wonderful Stay | | By Two from Tennessee on 6/29/2008 | | We arrived at the hotel after a 9-hour drive to a very apologetic staff who said that they hadn't been able to reach us by phone to tell us that their hot water boiler had burst and we'd have no hot water in our room. They called another hotel down the road and offered to send us down there or to let us stay for our reserved time at half price. I took the half price. The staff was always friendly and helpful. The hot water was partially restored the next day but we still were only charged half price the three nights we were there. The pool was good-sized and clean. The room was nothing fancy, just plain block, but it was large and clean with two comfortable queen beds. The room and entire place was quiet and peaceful with several families and fishermen braving the cold showers for the half-priced rate. | |

We expected a nice peaceful hotel, but we were wrong! As soon as we got there, we searched through the streets of Manteo for anything but this hotel! Thank Goodness we found somewhere else so much nicer!

| It was almost brand spanking new | | By a Guest Reviewer | | Back in the day, this was a upper scale motel. I'm so glad to read it's still in business. My family spent a holiday there - taking in The Lost Colony where a guy spilled cigarette ashes in my brother's hair (!), the room a/c was unbelievably, deliciously cold (a/cs were luxuries) and the furnishings were the most contemporary, the pool was to die for (although my nonswimming brother did fall in the deep end), and we talked about that vacation for years to come. Maybe I'll take my kids this summer for a stroll down memory lane. Pool still looks good in the pictures. Retro, huh? | |

| The absolute worst experience | | By a Guest Reviewer | | The management had my customers arrested in their rooms by police with guns drawn and dogs. One of the two guys was asleep in his underwear. They were dragged off to jail because of a noise complaint. Rooms need to be refurbished. Owner is totally unreasonable. | |

| Good bang for your buck | | By a Guest Reviewer | | nothing fancy but clean. reasonable rate, not on beach (5 miles away) but on sound side of the outerbanks. lost colony 2 mi, waterfront ½ mile great place to walk. good value especially for a family with kids. plenty of eating places close by. town has good family values and this motel reflects that way of thinking. honest friendly owners. | |

| Stayed there several times... | | By a Guest Reviewer | This is a good place to stay if you are fishing in the Nags Head area.
Its old and worn, but works for me. I can understand Sarah looking for something else if ''nice'' is what you are after.
The Duke has a great cancellation policy that allows you to cancel up till 5PM the day of your visit without penalty. This is great for me because the weather can be so unpredictable at the beach.
The folks at the front desk are great, and the room rate won't break the bank.

| Cheap Place Near the Beach | | By a Guest Reviewer | | My wife and I were arriving a day before we could stay at our beach house and we wanted to hit the Weeping Radish. So we found the cheapest place we could that would let you stay for only 1 weekend night - ye olde Duke of Dare. The Sheets were clean - the room, well worn. But it was safe and quiet. The only draw back for us was that they have no non-smoking rooms; the room smelled of stale cigarette smoke. It was a no frills kind of place. But it still had a pretty nice (and clean) pool. The place had character and was just what we needed for 1 night. I recommend it if you are not staying too long. If you are a smoker, stay as long as you want a well worn place close to the beach. Make sure to visit Weeping Radish Brew Hause & Restaurant - a little piece of Bavaria right on Manteo (pronounced 'Maneo' - ''small town.'') rmw | |

| Older motel offers no-frills value for today | | By a Guest Reviewer | I work all over the Southeast, and when I needed a place to stay in Manteo, I did what I usually do: searched for an older motel.
The Duke Of Dare, built in 1964, doesn't offer a lot of features; even hooking up to the internet is a challenge. What it does offer is a modest but clean room at a very, very good price. Moreover, it does it in the midst of a resort area where a fairly typical (nothing special) room goes for $100 or more a night easily.
It is located on the main highway right in the center of Manteo, but is surprisingly quiet. Restaurants, a few attractions, and banks are within 5 minutes drive. The people at the front desk are courteous and helpful.
It is a godsend for a business person on a budget, and I'd stay there again. In fact, I intend to do just that later this month.
