Freddy and Pam Ortega, cheerful New York transplants, run the immensely popular restaurant on Mateo's downtown waterfront. The place is hopping, even at breakfast; lunch gets the overflow from nearby Festival Park. Do like the locals do: get takeout and savor your sandwich by the waterfront. Choose anything from lean, char-grilled chili cheeseburgers to deli sandwiches, quesadillas, salads, and hearty chicken dishes. Quirkier options include spicy shrimp jammers (battered, filled with jalapeño cheese, and fried) or the specials, such as fried oyster sandwiches or burgers topped with crabmeat.

a relaxing meal

we decided to go here for dinner one night as something different (and cheaper than we had been doing) on our vacation. they were very accommodating of my 2 (squirmy) children. we ended up getting them grilled cheese, which they hurried to settle them down. my husband and i ordered quesadillas: jerk chicken w/ black beans & shrimp and chicken. they had no problem w/ my request of leaving out a couple of the ingredients. the quesadillas were surprisingly good and very filling. another table had ordered one of the specials that evening and said how good it was. this restaurant is located in a cute little area near the harbor. we even took a family picture on the HUGE chair out front!

Really good food! Favs are the veggie quesadilla and spinach salad.

This place is so laid back, yet the food is awesome. The prices are pretty good, and a great variety of types to choose from. Neat Location, but not always consistent in quality.

One of my favorite places at the Outer Banks

The place is quaint and the daily specials add variety to the already extensive menu. I asked the owner/chef if they could modify some of the menu items to make them vegetarian friendly. He seemed more than happy to meet my request. I must say, it was one of the best (if not the very best) veggie pita I have tasted. Great place for breakfast also. I will most certainly be back!

Went there for lunch today. The appetizer came out after the meal and the owners were extremely rude. WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!! And I am a local!
