Summer Youth Learn to Sail Program

NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. - morning and afternoon sessions available. This 1-week course is offered 8 weeks throughout the summer. The first week-long course begins on June 9, and the last course ends on August 1. Open to youth 8 and older. Basic and intermediate instruction. Students sail Optimist and 420 sail boats. NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island: This youth program is held from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with morning and afternoon sessions available. Open to youth 8 and older. Roanoke Island Festival Park: This children's program is offered Tuesday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. There will be a different children's show each week. The show is free to general admission ticket holders and Friends of Elizabeth II. All guests must have a ticket. Friends of Elizabeth II may pick up tickets in advance at the Park's Visitor Center during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or call in advance to reserve the tickets.

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Jeff Linn creates photographs of area landscapes, flowers and more. He's accompanied by Dan Waters who turns photography into visual poetry as he works with light and form to capture everything from expressive color in a flower, texture of sand or rain on sea glass. Elizabeth Kiourtzidis fills out the trio with a variety of effervescent photos from fashion shots and baby portraits to nature and local scenes. The exhibition speaks to the many kinds of photography available to the professional and the myriad ways the artist sees the world. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, July 6 from 4- 6 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

New for 2008, The Dare County Boat Builders Foundation have decided to add an additional day of fishing to the 5th Annual Boat Builders Challenge at Pirate's Cove. You will fish the best two days of three.
Last year, DeWalt Power Tools was the Diamond sponsor and the event hosted 35 boats from North Carolina and other states. Our one-of-a-kind waterfront pavilion will play host to several national and local sponsors whose merchandise will be available for purchase onsite. Outdoor Pavilion at Roanoke Island Festival Park: One of the most elegant and perfect romantic comedies ever made, The Cameraman tells the story of a tintype photographer (Buster Keaton) who falls in love with a pretty girl (Marceline Day) and decides he can win her over by becoming a newsreel cameraman. The film contains two scenes famous in film history: Keaton's famous, beautifully improvised one-man baseball game filmed at Yankee Stadium and the classic scene with Keaton and another man crammed into a changing booth, both trying to climb into swim suits. The Cameraman gives Keaton one of his best roles and he fills it with one of his most touching performances. The rain location for this event is inside the Film Theater. Admission is free.

Film Theatre at Roanoke Island Festival Park: This production is a humorous musical farce based on the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and her half-sister, Mary Tudor. The two loathed one another and yet are buried in the same tomb in London's Westminster Abbey. The production takes place in the tomb, in the present day. Admission is included in the general admission ticket to the Park. All guests must have a ticket for admission.
Show dates are August 6, 13 and 20 at 3:00 p.m. This show will also be held earlier in the year on June 4, 11 and 18 at 3:00 p.m.

Shepherd of The Ocean

Film Theatre at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Shepherd of the Ocean is a whimsical comedy about Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I and takes place moments before Sir Walter Raleigh's execution. He has been sentenced to be beheaded by King James I of England on a charge of treason. King James I succeeded Queen Elizabeth to the English throne. At the time of his death, Sir Walter Raleigh was in his 60's and Queen Elizabeth had been dead for 15 years. The show is produced by Elizabeth R and Company. Admission is included in the general admission ticket to the Park. All guests must have a ticket for admission. They can be ordered in advance by reserving tickets at (252)475-1500 or one hour prior to each performance at the theatre.
Show dates will be August 7, 14 and 21 at 3:00 p.m. This show will also be held earlier in the year on June 5, 12 and 19 at 3:00 p.m.

In 1989, Alice Kelly was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. Shortly after that she started the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, inc and was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization with its primary focus of providing moral support to cancer survivors and their families and offering travel / transportation to and from nearby treatment facilities.
As one of the primary sources of income for the OBCSG, Pirate's Cove proudly donates 85% of the entry fees from this tournament and encourages all our participants to donate what ever they can.
This tournament is for ladies only and is considered a practice day for our famed Billfish Tournament. Slips are extremely limited so register
as soon as possible.

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Mary Crutchfield has been painting with a group of Elizabeth City women (Margie Sawyer, Peggy West, Patricia Sterritt and Ricky Thornton) for the last 35 years. They also travel together, often painting on location and gaining inspiration for their work. Some of the members of the group have passed away over the years leaving a core group to carry on the creativity of what they call Studio Gallery of Elizabeth City. Despite having kept company for a number of years, each artist has their own style. They will be showcasing watercolors, water media, printmaking and acrylic painting with collage elements. An opening reception will be held on September 7 from 4-6 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The show hours are Mon-Fri 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Roanoke Island Festival Park: lizabethan Tymes: A Country Faire will open on Saturday, October 4, and continue through Sunday, October 5. The Faire will be held, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. The Guilde of St. Andrew, based in Raleigh, North Carolina and frequent presenters with Roanoke Island Festival Park, will take the lead in bringing Elizabethan England to life. The Faire will be held, rain or shine. It is open the public. The admission price to the Faire is included in Roanoke Island Festival Park's general admission ticket and is good for both days of the event.
Bill Nelson: New Works

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Bill Nelson of Roanoke Island is featuring new illustrations and figurative sculpture. He is a nationally known artist whose work has appeared in numerous national publications including Newsweek, Time and The New Yorker. His figurative sculptures or dolls are in the collections of Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore and David Copperfield. Personality exudes from these remarkable works that feature lifelike gestures and detailed clothing. His illustrations are created using colored pencil. Generating a flawless technique, Nelson leaves the viewer breathless. He created a series of stamps of Big Band leaders for the US Postal service and has received over 500 accolades for his work. An opening reception will be held on October 5. It is free and open to the public. The show hours are Mon- Fri from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Trick or Treat Under The Sea

NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island: Spooks, ghosts and strange aquatic creatures will greet children as they enjoy this popular event. Aquarium staff will make preparations to ensure a spooktacular time for all. This event will feature an underwater dive show, Count Sharkula, creepy crafts, activities, spine-tingling scream contests, costume contests, and lots of yummy munchies to be given to each child during the event. Ticket sales will begin on October 1st with admission fee for ages 3 and above; those age two and under will be admitted free. Tickets are limited and will be sold in advance at the Aquarium.

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Billy Brown is a long time Outer Banks waterman who has a passion for NC history. He is a former teacher who loves to paint scenes from the area to include Oregon Inlet vistas he's seen while fishing. His acrylics feature seasonal shots of sunrises and sunsets and landscapes of the area including Bodie Island. He paints underwater fish scenes and anglers. An opening reception will be held on December 7 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The show can be viewed Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Roanoke Island Festival Park: Don't let the holiday spirit fade! On Saturday, December 27, come join in the fun as Roanoke Island Festival Park celebrates the third day of Christmas. Visitors to the Park can get a taste of 16th century holiday traditions from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. as they make decorations, learn special dances, sing songs, discover food and drink of the season, and indulge in merriment with members of the Guild of St. Andrew. Many events will be held inside and the celebration will go on, rain or shine. In the Settlement Site visitors can join with the interpreters as they “recreate” their celebration in the American wilderness, with simple decorations and a roast over the open fire. There may even be a few more surprises of the season. We'll see you there and wish you Merry Yuletide!
