History, mystery and fantasy are combined in these special gardens, which are a memorial to the first English colonists who came to North America in 1584-1587 and walked away through the dark forest into history. In 1951, The Garden Club of North Carolina adopted The Elizabethan Gardens as a project. The Gardens were designed by two of the nation's foremost landscape architects, M. Umberto Innocenti and Richard Webel and display a collection of ancient garden statuary from the John Hay Whitney collection.

Flower bordered walkways, antique garden statuary and majestic trees greet visitors at this 16th century pleasure garden created by The Garden Club of North Carolina as a living memorial to the lost colonists. Highlights include the thatched gazebo, Shakespearean herb garden and formal sunken gardens. A plethora of beautiful flowering plants, wildflowers, shrubs and trees located at the historic site of The Lost Colony. Created by The Garden Club of North Carolina to memorialize the colonists who were lost these lovely gardens include ancient statuary and Shakespearean Herb Garden.

There is beauty for all, year round, in this lovely garden in its tranquil setting on the shores of Roanoke Sound. Located within Fort Raleigh adjacent to Waterside Theatre.

Review Guidelines
Basic Review Guidelines:

Your review should focus on specific aspects of the business you are reviewing. Do not simply state you liked or disliked the business - be specific.

The best reviews include not only whether you liked or disliked a business' products or service, but also why.

DO NOT TYPE IN ALL CAPS!

Do not mention competing company names in your reviews. Focus on the company you are reviewing, and if you wish, leave a review about the other companies on their directory listings.

Do not comment on other reviews - respect their position and write your own, but do not argue with others.

Do not use profanity or post spiteful remarks.

Do not write a review that is less than 50 words in length. The goal of a review is to share your experiences with a particular company - very short reviews do not accomplish this.

Do not post phone numbers, email addresses or URLs.

Do not post inflammatory reviews - stop and put yourself in the shoes of the owner of the business you are posting about.

Do not post many reviews about one business. Doing this will cause all of your reviews to be deleted.

Remember, you are responsible for your words.

Great place for gardening & flower lovers
By Sara on 10/5/2007
This is a great place to take in breathtaking views of flowers and gardeners. You can learn rich history about Roanoke Island and Nags Head whilst admiring the beautiful displays. The only bad thing about this place is the annoying mosquitoes. Be sure to wear plenty of bug repellant before your arrival (and bring a bottle with you).

Just beautiful. The day we went, the weather was perfect and it was so peaceful with the flowers and the sound of the water. I really enjoyed reading the information from the map about the different plants and sights. Walking out to the water and looking across the sound, it gave me a glimpse of what it would have been like for the colonists when they first arrived here.

Picture Perfect

I love this Garden...It has the most beautiful statues and an amazing assortment of flowers, trees, and bushes. Not to mention that it has a beautiful view of the sound (I believe that is what that was). I remember thinking while walking around, how gorgeous it would be to have a wedding there. I mean you already have all the flowers you'll need, a beautiful scenery, and the little area in the middle (sorry folks forgot what it was called) that is all ready for you to exchange vows with your loved one.

Sounds picture perfect to me!
