The Outer Banks History Center is a regional archives and research library administered by the North Carolina State Archives (Department of Cultural Resources) with the mission of collecting and preserving the history and culture of the North Carolina coast. Collections include personal and organizational papers; books; photographs; periodicals and newspapers; maps (1584+) and drawings; public records on microfilm; oral histories and other audio and video recordings; ephemera; and original works of art. Exhibits are presented in the History Center Gallery throughout the year on topics as varied as the history of the region itself. The museum is located at the Roanoke Island Festival complex.

| Value: | | Service: | | | | By Visitor from NC on 9/26/2007 | | We had a lot of fun here! The musuem was very interesting and educational. There were many exhibits on the colonists and the Native Americans they encountered. There were also presentations about the lighthouses, the Freedman's Colony, lifesaving stations and the waterfowl of the area. Many of the exhibits were hands on-in one part there were colonial costumes that you could try on, for kids and adults. There were maps and displays, guns and tents and a general store set. They also had a film about the Native Americans' perspective that we did not see. This would be a great place to take the kids for a fun history lesson. | |
