When the town of Kitty Hawk is mentioned, one can't help but to think of the Wright brothers who flew their first successful powered aircraft back in 1903. Yet what many people don't realize is that Orville and Wilbur Wright actually flew that first successful flight from nearby Kill Devil Hills. From here, the brothers came to the nearest telegraph office, Kitty Hawk, to let their father know of their success. The Wright Brothers National Memorial, located in Kill Devil Hills, explained this common mistake that marks this world changing event.
Kitty Hawk does boast of some of the widest beaches on the Outer Banks as well as many municipal parks with miles and miles of paths for walking, jogging or cycling. The Kitty Hawk Woods, a maritime forest, showcases the multitude of wildlife and vegetation common to this area. The Woods encompasses a vast area of land, just shy of 1900 acres. As a day trip, families and friends bring food on their hike or bike to find a peaceful and quiet picnic location. Bird lovers flock to this lush area for the many different species protected in the area. Many different types of woodpeckers, wrens, hawks, warblers, and other songbirds reside in the natural area.
