Drive onto the ferry at the south end of Hatteras Island for a free boat ride. You will cross Hatteras Inlet to the charming island of Ocracoke. You'll want to spend a whole day exploring the village shops, restaurants and historic sites. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes long. Once you get off the ferry onto Ocracoke Island, you'll need transportation - your car or a bicycle - because it's about 13 miles from the ferry dock to the village.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation operates ferry service to Ocracoke, originating from Hatteras, Cedar Island and Swan Quarter. Advance reservations for the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferries are strongly advised. The Hatteras ferry operates on a first come, first serve basis with no reservations required. For the current schedule information, call 1-800-BY-FERRY.
