The Breakwater at Oden's Dock is a local favorite. The second-story restaurant and bar overlook the harbor and its stone breakwater, from which the restaurant gets its name. The view of the sound and the sunsets is breathtaking, making this a popular dinner choice. The restaurant serves dinner only, with a menu featuring creative, contemporary preparations of seafood, prime rib and other meats, and pasta. The fresh-baked bread and desserts are delicious. Some children's dishes are offered as well. Live acoustic entertainment is offered on the deck on some summer evenings.

Review Guidelines
Basic Review Guidelines:

Your review should focus on specific aspects of the business you are reviewing. Do not simply state you liked or disliked the business - be specific.

The best reviews include not only whether you liked or disliked a business' products or service, but also why.

DO NOT TYPE IN ALL CAPS!

Do not mention competing company names in your reviews. Focus on the company you are reviewing, and if you wish, leave a review about the other companies on their directory listings.

Do not comment on other reviews - respect their position and write your own, but do not argue with others.

Do not use profanity or post spiteful remarks.

Do not write a review that is less than 50 words in length. The goal of a review is to share your experiences with a particular company - very short reviews do not accomplish this.

Do not post phone numbers, email addresses or URLs.

Do not post inflammatory reviews - stop and put yourself in the shoes of the owner of the business you are posting about.

Do not post many reviews about one business. Doing this will cause all of your reviews to be deleted.

Remember, you are responsible for your words.

Adding new reviews is currently disabled while we work on launching a new website.

the Breakwater is NOT the same as in years past. The meats are tough, the sauce on the ribeye was good, but the texture was not like in years past.
I hope to give them one last chance this spring...maybe they will upgrade their meats this new year.

The Breakwater Restaurant is my favorite restaurant, although I only get to eat at it once a year. My family and I look forward to coming to Hatteras and eating there. My husband tried the seafood stew for the first time, he loved it. I was pleased with the ribeye with sauteed peppers and mushrooms. I've had it before and it seems to get better each year! If you go there, we recommend the stew, ribeye, and all the seafood. I believe most are locally caught along the Outer Banks.

The quality of the food in this restaurant has gone so downhill! The fish was so so, the steaks tasted funky and were tough, not the same place by any means. Very disappointing. Even the fried seafood is more greasy than in the past. Very sad.

yeah, stay away from the steaks, even the filet is not as good as years past... The seafood is still super, esp. the crabcakes...a big disappointment--no salad with the entree this year.

The seafood this year is pretty good and the atmosphere can't be beat, but the steaks are kind of tough. But, it is a seafood area, so I guess stick with seafood! We miss the old prime rib. That was superb!

Over the years the Breakwater has remained a mainstay on the Outer Banks. Although you can count on the ''Fat Daddy Crabcakes'' to appease, many of the entrees lack the pizazz of the past. Certainly worth the trip though.

Yeah, I got the run around the last time I was there, too. What a shame, since the menu seems to be pretty good. My husband refused to be treated that way so we left before we had a chance to try the food.

Had dinner there recently and it was excellent. They were very busy, but the service was good. Steak Oscar was delicious, and large portion of it. The crabmeat was very fresh and piled to the top. Great place; we will go back next time we are in Hatteras.

Rude, terrible service
By Jim H on 9/5/2007
Went for my dad's 80th birthday. Promised a table for 6 in 20 minutes. When that turned into over an hour and we spoke to the manager, we were ''invited'' to find another place to eat. We've made the Breakwater our last night out in Hatteras for over 10 years--never, ever again.

Went to this eatery several years ago, had a lovely evening with my girl friend. As we ate and talked we were able to enjoy the views of the Atlantic. Davin L. Berrier

Fat Daddy Crab Cakes!
By Mallory on 12/10/2006
You have to try the ''fat daddy crab cakes''! The outside is crispy and it comes with a pineapple jalapeno salsa! So good, and the filet oscar is superb! The cooks take pride in their food!
