At the Southern tip of the Outer Bank's Hatteras Island lies Hatteras. Though it shares the name with the area, it is known only as Hatteras to locals. It is known as a fishing Mecca on the eastern coast to many. You can take a private charter boat for amazing deep sea fishing. Sport fishing rules in the area where boats venture in the Sound or where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf Stream. Anything from Mahi-Mahi to Wahoo, King Mackerel and Tuna are found in the waters. Depending on the season, many different Billfish, such as Blue and White Marlin and Sailfish are tagged a released.
If you're lucky you could see a family of whales out across the waterway. After spending a day on the water, you can unload your fresh catch and have the marina fillet the fish for you. The Hatteras Ocracoke Ferry will carry you to the remote island of Ocracoke where you may see a school of dolphins close to shore. The "Graveyard of the Atlantic" museum is also close to the ferry and showcases the well-known history and folklore of the many ships that wrecked sailing into the ports of the Outer Banks. The museum is visually structured to resemble the many shipwrecks in the area's history. There's always something fun and interesting to do in Hatteras.
