| Value: | | Service: | | | | TO EACH HIS OWN | | By Guest on 6/29/2008 | | I strongly disagree with the locals not recommending Tullio's Bakery. It is not easy having a business here in the OBX. I must admit that the stress of doing heavy business in the summer and none in the off season is hard for families. Dealing with some of the vacationers is also at times stressful. Some of them are inpatient, rude, demanding and unfriendly. My greeting of hello to many of them gets me no response in return. As far as the locals not using Tullios, I have enjoyed their pastries at church gatherings, schools etc. I would have liked to witness the behavior of these angry customers when they were in the bakery to create the response they got from the owners. | |

| Value: | | Service: | | | | Great Carrot Cake and Cheesecake | | By NYYanksfan on 6/28/2008 | | I have to say thumbs up on the carrot cake and cheesecakes!! they were delicious. I have found that not everyone can have a good experience and everyone is entitled to have a bad day. So I feel I need to give a positive comment since a few customers who were not as lucky to have a good experience as we did can learn that nobody is perfect. Also we loved the homemade fudge. | |

| Value: | | Service: | | | | Rude customers | | By Guest on 4/20/2008 | | My family and I have been coming to Duck for over ten years and we come to Tullio's multiple times each summer. 4 people in our family have summer birthdays and we always get the cakes from Tullios because they are SO delicious. I've never had such amazing buttercream icing! And if you come to get some breakfast goodies, the sticky buns are INCREDIBLE! Tullios has a great variety of every breakfast and dessert pastry imaginable! | |

| Value: | | Service: | | | | Very happy! | | By an NCBeaches Guest on 10/3/2007 | | We ordered my daughter's wedding cake from Tullio's late Sept. 2007. I found the owner to be very helpful and accommodating. The cake was delivered to the restaurant exactly when he promised and it was lovely. These cakes are not your run-of-the-mill chain grocery store cakes. They tend to be a dense cake with frosting that is not overly sweet. My mother-in-law is from NY and is accustomed to fine Italian bakeries and she, along with everyone else, thought it was delicious. | |

We had a family wedding reception in Nags Head, and I ordered a gorgeous wedding cake over the phone. I had viewed a photo of the cake on Tullio's Web site. When I arrived at the shop to pick up the cake, the outdoor temp was a scorching 102 degrees. The bakery's AC had broken that day, and it was HOTTER inside the bakery. The owner had chosen to bake the wedding cake and frost it with buttercream even though the temp in the bakery was in excess of 100 degrees. When I got the cake home and looked at it, I saw the cake had fallen on its side and the frosting was a mess. I called the bakery immediately (within 15 minutes of picking up the cake). Once the owner finally called me back, he agreed I could return the cake only if I did not eat any of it. That was fair. I returned the whole cake the next day, and I was met with extreme anger and disrespect by the bakery staff. They treated me like a criminal. The owner honored his promise and did NOT charge my credit card for this order.
You will have a much more enjoyable and stress-free vacation to the Outer Banks if you STAY OUT OF TULLIO'S BAKERY!

We have always found the locals, shop owners and quality of service to be very high. I am sorry to say that being a customer of Tullio's has really left us with a bad taste (literally). During our recent visit to Corolla, we were celebrating a very special occasion and had tried hard to make everything just right. Sad to say, everything was great except the cakes we purchased from Tullio's. After just a few bites everyone stopped eating and pushed their plates away. The cakes tasted horrible. In an attempt to bring this to the owners attention we were met with some of the rudest behavior I have ever seen. They were insulting, demeaning and combative. They should be ashamed. How embarrassing. I hope this review can prevent someone else from making the same mistake we did. Customer service does not exist with this establishment, not to mention the worst cake I have ever tasted.

After getting the cakes and trying them, everyone (23 people) thought that the cake was missing something in the ingredients because of the taste and texture. We returned the cakes the next day and spoke with both owners and tried to get something done. We were told (very rudely) that there would be no refund, that we didn't know what good food tasted like, and that we probably were used to cakes purchased from Food Lion. We were probably trying to get a refund because we thought the cake was too expensive. I can honestly say that we have never been treated that poorly ever!!!!! No apology, no I'm sorry, nothing other than we must have bad taste, are used to Food Lion cakes and we probably couldn't afford it. Any type of apology or sympathy for the situation was all we were looking for. A full refund would have been ideal but not necessary, anything other than being insulted would probably have made the situation a little easier to forget.

Two of my relatives have birthdays in that period, so we always order our birthday cakes from Tullio's. The cakes are always fresh and we know exactly what we are buying for our money. Our holidays are connected with the time that we spend in that little, charming bakery, located in the Scarborough Faire Shopping Centre. The variety of pastries is really amazing and you can even watch while the guys are making the delicious temptations. I don't know why these people are writing such things. They are really not true. You can assure yourselves after visiting the bakery, where the best buns on the beach are made.

Save your time and money and get a dessert [elsewhere]! I have yet to find a local resident that likes this bakery, and the poor service is the number one reason.

| 4 of 4 people found this review helpful: | | Value: | | Service: | | | | Very Disappointed | | By Guest on 7/4/2007 | | For my daughter's 18th birthday I went in to Tullios in Duck and placed an order with a very young girl who could not tell me the cost of the cake or what time to pick the cake up the next day. I asked if there were an adult around and found she was the only person in the store, so I crossed my fingers and hoped the order would be communicated properly. The next morning I received a phone call from an adult (apparently the mother of the child who had taken my order) asking what day we wanted the order and the name for the ''Happy Birthday'' writing was incorrect. So we got that straightened out and the next day when the cake was supposed to be ready I called the only number in the phone book for Tullio's in Duck. I was told that there were no cakes there and that they had no orders for any cakes. After what I had already been through I was a little miffed -- only then did I find out that the phone number in the telephone book was not the correct number for this Tullio's. So I called the other and yes the cake was ready, so we got ready to go and pick up the cake when the phone rang. It was the mother of the children that were running the bakeries, she was very angry that I had upset one of her children and began to yell at me. I hung up the phone. To only get another call 10 minutes later from both the mother and father -- yelling and cursing at my boyfriend. To put it mildly -- I will never step foot in any Tullio's again. Buisnesses are run by adults for a reason and this one should be no different. | |
