I felt it was a good meal at a reasonable price. I had the pan-fried fish special and it was delicious. The risotto was cooked perfectly. My husband raved about his meal of shrimp and grits. Our server, Jay, was attentive but not too attentive and timed our meal well. The cornmeal oysters were a hit. There is nothing better than well-prepared local food!

Whatever the new chef is doing, they better hang on to him. Prices were comparative to any of the restaurants in the vicinty, with wonderful creativity, quantity, and taste. We are staying in Duck on our upcoming trip, and will drive the hour and a half to eat again!!

Expectations were low, but the menu and draft beer selection was stunning. Chimay Triple? You rarely see that ale on tap in major cities in the U.S. It paired perfectly with the Shrimp & Grits, clearly their signature dish, as it was the favorite of the waitress that evening, plus the sous chef who wound up serving us when we returned the night after for dinner at a more reasonable hour.
For the return visit I was craving crab, so I tried the Fried Soft Shells: two generous whole crabs atop delicious potatoes with a perfect slaw on the side. Sure, it might look like small portions, but this is the way food should be served: quality over quantity, and a proper dinner portion. If I wanted to stuff my face, I would have joined the rest of the tourists at Dirty Dicks.
On that note, I'm saddened to read a couple people had bad experiences there. We were told the chef recently changed which led to the improved menu, so I can only assume there were dire-hard fans of the original menu not expecting fine dining upon their return. I, on the other hand, would be more than happy to eat (and drink) here every night.

The paella was wonderful, but our son ordered the calamari and it was inedible. It was over-breaded, greasy, and way undercooked. To their credit however they comped the dish when we told them why his plate was still full at the end of the meal.

I typically do not write restaurant reviews but the experience was so horrible, I felt compelled to ward off other unsuspecting diners. After a long wait, we were greeted by a flustered and not particularly friendly waitress. The portions on all the meals were so small and inadequate in comparision to the exorbitant prices. The broiled fish combo platter was soooooo overcooked that the edges of the fish were sharp and unedible. The menu claimed that the dish was cooked in a butter white wine sauce but the sauce was nowhere to be found and the meal was extremely dry. The rice that accompanied the meal was obviously from the bottom of the pot because it was hard, visibly burned, and tasted as such; it too was extremely dry. We told our waitress and were later given mashed potatoes. Because the combo fish portions were so small, however, there was little left to eat with the potatoes. Green beans were supposed to be provided but were replaced by tasteless (likely frozen) corn - we were never told that the beans were not available. The portions were so small that even the children (under age 8) were still hungry. Admittedly the fried shrimp and shrimp & grits were tasty but overall the experience was subpar. Similar to Hattaras Fan, we will never revisit this restaurant again.

| Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | Ambiance: | | | | Just An Average Place | | By Hatteras Fan on 7/9/2008 | | Went with some friends. I had the fish tacos. They were pretty good but the portion size is small. You get nothing more then a small portion of rice, beans, pico de gallo and 4 cooked shells with the fish. It should have come with a salad or something more. My friend had shrimp. The potatoes that came with that meal were diced, overly spiced and by far were over cooked to the point of being dried out, lucke warm and chewy. She had about 6 green beens on her plate (not kidding). The waitress was great and swapped out the dried out overly spiced diced potatoes for mashed. All in all, I'm not the least bit impressed. Look elsewhere for a hearty, great tasting meal. This one is off my list. | |

I would reccomend the alaskan snow crab legs any day. My and my. Family also enjoyed playing trivial pursuit while we were waiting for our food. The waitress was excellent on service it was like she knew exactly when I was about to run out of sweet tea. the only downy was that you couldn't here the TV, but you can read the captions so the not all bad. I LOVE CRAB DADDYS

| 1 of 1 people found this review helpful: | | Better than ever~ | | By an NCBeaches Guest on 6/15/2008 | | I have eaten at MackDaddy's since the first day they opened and all I can say is it is better than any other year we have eaten there! The Shrimp and Grits are faboulous, the crab cakes are superb, the crab dip was mouth watering, the bread, the tea, EVERYTHING! All of the sauces that accompanied the meals...oh yeah, the salads rocked! Only one problem, we had no room for dessert, but we will be back again and again!!!!Yum yum yum!!!! | |

| Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | By an NCBeaches Guest on 5/20/2008 | | Recently we visited and the food was scrumptious! The only disappointment was in the chewienss of the beef. The preparation was good, but the meat was not so tender. We'll be back anyhow. The seafood was fantastic! So were the appetizers! And everything that accompanied the dishes like the veggies and the potatoes! | |

Food not like last year. Couldn't wait to eat here again, now disapointted. Don't know if new owners took over or what. Hope it goes back to how it was. Was favorite spot to eat. Something is just not right. Hate to see such a nice place go sour. Helen and friends if your reading, not like last year.

I knew we had a babysitter and was going to have a rare evening out without children. I did some web searchs and found MACK DADDY'S. Based on other reviews, we went there and had AN EXCELLENT meal. The service was A+, the food was WONDERFUL. My husband and I are big eaters and it was a nice surprise to have a nice meal that wasn't some dainty fancy portion. Will definitely visit again.

Portions are generous, but not impossible to finish. My wife had the pecan encrusted fresh catch and I had the tuna; both were excellent with unique flavors. The atmosphere is nice, but also fun with paper table cloths and crayons at each table. This was a big plus in keeping our 18 month old son occupied. The only downside is that the prices were in the high range for the area ($17 - $23)and the service was a little slow for a mostly empty restaurant at 5:00 pm. Overall, this is a great place with courteous staff and excellent food.

This is the 8th year we have visited. Today was our first visit to Mack Daddy's. I can honestly say it was the best dinner we have ever experienced on the Outer Banks. Our visit to Mack Daddy's was by accident. We were originally planning on another restaurant until reading the reviews. The portions are excellent and the food is delicious. We will return.

It was wonderful! I've never had food this good in my life. Friendly people and excellent chefs. They are most likely the best chefs on the Island. I encourage everyone to eat if you are in OBX. Great food and great prices!

I had the catch of the day with crab meat and my husband had the meatloaf. The fish was perfectly cooked and the crab was fresh and delicious. The meatloaf was a step up from what I make at home. And the black and tan my husband ordered was the real thing. Wish we'd discovered this place sooner.

The food is delicious and very filling (generous portions). Friendly wait staff, clean interior, pleasant decor... we left full and satisfied. One minor complaint, which may not not bother everyone - the soda (Coke) was in a pitcher so it tasted a little flat. Other than that, Mack Daddy's gets 5 stars across the board and is highly recommended!

Highly recommend Mack Daddy's. Any trip to Hatteras would be a waste without visiting Mack Daddy's.

It is always one of the highlights of our trip. We found a menu from Mack Daddy's in our car several months after vacation, and just reading it made us want to drive the 8 hours just to eat there again.
