This beautiful beach lies on the 26 mile barrier island of Topsail Island and is one of two communities on the area. For those looking for a laid-back, casual environment Surf City is the place. The quiet community and simple island life draw tourists to the area, many of whom decide they'll retire at this beautiful beach. With approximately 1,400 permanent residents on the beach, the area remains a peaceful area. As the name suggests, surfing and other water activities are popular throughout the summer months. Surf lessons are also taught at surf camps throughout the summer so kids can have some fun learning the enjoyable beach pastime from trained instructors.
Fishing is also an entertaining pastime that locals and tourist enjoy no matter what the season. Surf fishing with a net or string can be observed throughout the warmer months and you can expect to catch anything from flounder to bluefish or crab. Deep sea fishing, because of the Gulf Stream, has become more popular and there are many charters available in the area to take you and your family on a fun-filled adventure. There are also annual fishing tournaments for the more competitive fishermen. The Topsail Offshore Fishing Club sponsors a king mackerel fishing tournament in October with proceeds that benefit the local fire department.
There are a few shops scattered along the town that offer Surf City memorabilia, gifts and clothing. The restaurants on the island, some waterfront spots, serve delicious seafood as well as other cuisine. You'll find exactly what you're looking for in a peaceful family vacation in the small coastal community of Surf City.
