Roanoke Island

Visitors to North Carolina's Outer Banks may come for the miles of unspoiled shoreline and charming coastal beach towns that border the Atlantic Ocean, but one of the area's best treasures, rich in history, attractions, and gorgeous scenery, is located just a few miles away from the beach.

Roanoke Island may be small and less populated with summertime visitors than the nearby towns of Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk, but it's a quintessential stop of any Outer Banks exploration. Home to the NC Aquarium, the Lost Colony, historic downtown Manteo and Roanoke Island Festival Park, this beautiful coastal community is definitely worth a visit.

The geography

At about 8 miles long and two miles wide, Roanoke Island is bordered by two bodies of water that separate it from the barrier island of the Outer Banks and mainland North Carolina: the Roanoke Sound on the East side of the island, and the Croatan Sound on the west side.

Because it's surrounded by calmer shallow waters, Roanoke Island is a mecca for boaters and part of the Intercostal Waterway, and has a number of harbors and bays for people to dock their boats. There are two towns on Roanoke Island, that may be considered small, but are both noteworthy and recognized for their own distinctions.

At about 8 miles long and two miles wide, Roanoke Island is bordered by two bodies of water that separate it from the barrier island of the Outer Banks and mainland North Carolina: the Roanoke Sound on the East side of the island, and the Croatan Sound on the west side.

Manteo is the larger and more recognizable of the two, and is home to the aquarium, a charming waterfront downtown, the Festival Park, and The Lost Colony. Rich in history and offering a number of accommodations, shops and restaurants, the town of Manteo is a popular attraction for folks visiting the Outer Banks.

Roanoke Island is easy to get to, as it is located along U.S. Highway 64, the major highway from mainland North Carolina to the Outer Banks.
