The USS Alabama is in Alabama and the USS New Jersey is in New Jersey. However, it is more an exception than a rule that a battleship winds up in its namesake state, particularly where that state is landlocked—which might explain why the USS Missouri and the USS Arizona are in Hawaii, and numerous others are in Charleston, SC.

Also, the actual class of the ship was called the North Carolina, applied not only to this particular battleship but to a class or type of ship. And the North Carolina name has also been bestowed upon destroyers, aircraft carriers and submarines.

To visit the USS North Carolina

Many major highways converge in the immediate vicinity of Eagle Island and, as noted, the battleship is one of the most visible landmarks in Wilmington. Highways 17 and 421 conjoin to cross the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, as do Highways 74 and 76. Access from Highway 40 is relatively simple using the 140 exit and then following the signs for Highway 17 South.

The hours are: September 15 to May 15, open daily 8 am to 5 pm; May 16 to September 14, open daily 8 am to 8 pm.
