Price was way to high, taste was awful and service was not that great. My daughter used to eat shrimp until she ate the shrimp at this restaurant. We will most certainly not be back.

It's waterfront location, excellent vista, walls filled with history, colorful t-shirts, and staff (that really don't care to hear you bellyache about the poor quality of your meal) all work in a concerted effort to pull off the legendary “Jedi Mind Trick.” “No, these aren't the tasty shrimp and flounder you're looking for " but please pay for them as you leave, and move along.” Then you walk out the door, maybe pick up a fishing brochure from one of the dazzling charter boats docked just outside and that's when you began feeling a little confused and start asking yourself a series of questions; “ What just happened? . . . I can't believe I just paid that much for that meal! . . . How can I get this taste out of my mouth? . . . and why did I buy this t-shirt in this color?”
The Sanitary is a Morehead City culinary icon with a lot of history behind it, and a place responsible for the sale of countless t-shirts; it's simply the kind of place you really want to like. However, I've had more consistent bad meals at the Sanitary than any restaurant that comes to mind. If you visiting I would recommend something else as there are many good choices in the area (Morehead, Beaufort, and Atlantic Beach). Eat with caution.

This is a very poor restaurant, more focused on having a neat name and selling T-shirts than on preparing excellent food.

The food is great and you get to eat right on the water. You see the fresh seafood coming in. The staff has always been friendly and the food has always been good. Hope you are there for forty more years.

We waited about 15 mins to be seated which was great. The waiter Larry came and took out drink order, and brought us hush puppies. It then took 25 mins to bring drinks. We all ordered, from flounder to oysters. The food arrived and was luke warm as if it had been under a warmer for hours. All in all we agree that the sea food was more like Mrs. Paul's. Especially the flounder. When you are paying about $20 per plate you expect a little more. This was the sentiment of several that night. I took 7 of my out of state friends there, and was embarrassed by the food. I have eaten there since my parents started taking us there in the 60's. I get better seafood and price in the mountains of NC. Will not eat there again!

| 4 of 5 people found this review helpful: | | Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | Ambiance: | | | | I was hoping for more than just Sanitary | | By an NCBeaches Guest on 4/17/2007 | My wife, son and I dined at the Sanitary April 6 and were disappointed. We too have been taken in by all the t-shirts touted the restaurant and after our visit I believe they are more interested in selling the t-shirts than preparing good meals. T-shirts dominate the waiting area and cash registers.
My wife had clam strips, my son shrimp and I had oysters. We arrived after the lunch hour so this was off the dinner menu. Hushpuppies were delivered along with our drinks and they were hot and chrispy as others have noted but not very flavorful. That is the overall complaint we all could agree on---a lack of seasoning for almost every item. My oysters good about the way I like them being a bit crunchy on the edges and hot through and through. But without some hint of salt or other additional help they just didn't pop with flavor.
My son's shrimp was very good and made both my wife and I wish we had ordered shrimp as well. A nice fresh flavor. The fries with his meal through were also a bit bland.
The real problem was my wife's clam strips. They were either overcooked or had been cooked twice. The batter was thick and hard and the clam strips, always a bit chewy, were akin to rubberbands. Even though it was a late lunch and we were all very hungry my wife chose to stop eating the clam strips. The waitress didn't seem to be overly shocked that she could not eat her entree and did offer to bring something else. But the waitress had been so late to check on us my son and I nearly finished and my wife was really disenchanted.
So the ticket arrived and I noticed there had been no adjustment for my wife's meal. Okay, I said, that can be handled at the register. Once at the register the normal question came, ''How was your meal?'' ''Well, not very good my wife sent back her clam strips and there has been no adjustment for that....'' Another lady then comes to the register and informs me that she tasted my wife's clam strips and she found nothing wrong! At that point I really questioned the name ''Sanitary'' and why on Earth anyone would eat something off a patrons plate rather than eat something straight from the kitchen. She explained she wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with the clam strips themselves. Again, if there was something wrong with the meat, taste something from the kitchen.
After debating whether my wife could or could not eat her meal she finally gave in and gave us a $5 credit on our bill for an entry that was more than double that discount.
As for fresh seafood I also must laugh a bit. One of the specials that day was jumping mullet. I asked about the fish and was told it was rather strongly flavored but locals liked it. Then the waitress went on to say it was frozen and not fresh. I don't quite understand why a restaurant also with a fresh market business advertises a special that is frozen rather fresh. Puzzles me.
On the bright side the restaurant was clean. So it does live up to its name. But I want to set my sights a little higher with my seafood restaurants than just being sanitary.

Love the waterside atmosphere in charming Morehead City. The food is consistently great and the she crab soup exceptional! Their prices are consistent with those in the area and are moderate overall. Can't wait to go back!

| 5 of 6 people found this review helpful: | | Unimpressed | | By a Guest Reviewer | | My family and I decided to eat here when we arrived in town, but ended up going to McDonalds after all was said and done! Not only was the food way over priced but when it got to the table it was cold and swimming in grease. They couldn't even get the iced tea right! We wont be back! | |

| 4 of 5 people found this review helpful: | | disappointed | | By a Guest Reviewer | When we lived in that area 30 years ago it was our favorite place to go but when we went in Sept. 2006 we were extremely disappointed. The food wasn't all that great for the outrageous prices they charge. The service was lousy. Sorry for the review but I asume you would prefer the truth of our experience of dining there. | |

They are located on the water creating an inviting atmosphere. The wait staff is great. I've eaten there well over a hundred times and never grow tired of this place. It great for families. You just have to eat there once to be hooked!

He had the corn and fish chowder, and shrimp. And hush-puppies were hot and crispy. And that was just lunch. We may have to go back for dinner, there was too much on the menu that we missed. All that an the view of the ocean too!!

| 2 of 4 people found this review helpful: | | not impressed | | By a Guest Reviewer | | I see their tshirt around a lot so I decided to go there this summer. The service was bad and the food was horrible. When I complaned to the manager he didn't seem to care so we left hungry. One of the people I was with said they had been to a good place down the street so we went there. It was refreshing to know that there were still some good restaurants on the waterfront. I quickly bought a Capt. Bill's tshirt to support a good restaurant. I don't see why everyone gets a Sanitary shirt when the place isn't that good? | |
