Cape Lookout National Seashore is made up of three barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina: Shackleford Banks, North Core Banks, and South Core Banks. All three of these islands are only accessible by boat. Shackleford Banks is the home of more than 100 wild horses. These horses can be observed from a distance, but since they are wild, it is recommended that you not approach them. Since 1812, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse has stood at the tip of South Core Banks. The Lighthouse that currently occupies the cape was completed in 1859. The Lighthouse is only open to the public 4 times a year, and a reservation is necessary to climb it.
