The Summer is busy, but that just proves my point that this place is good. The food is made freshly in house and I like that I can special order something without tripping up the whole system. Great for lunch or dinner and very reasonably priced. Try the grilled tuna or the filet melts in your mouth. Homemaded salad dressing with fresh greens wow what a concept:) It is definitely worth the wait, but I usually do a lot of late lunches in the summer time. Glad we have this restaurant in Emerald Isle.

(Lack of competition was the main reason.) Things have now changed and there are some comparable and better restaurants to pick from now. However, it's still a great choice if you're looking for an inexpensive meal. It's much better than going to a chain restaurant.
Pros: Salad dressings Croissants Texas Chicken Skewered Shrimp Potato Bacon Soup Beer prices
Cons: Usu, long wait during peak Gets smokey because of the bar The waitressing setup creates inefficiency.
The steaks aren't that great, but why would you expect them to be? It's not a steakhouse and it's not exactly Chicago either. The pastas aren't worth raving about either, but why would you go to an American cuisine restaurant for pasta? Eat at an Italian restaurant or a place that caters to pasta dishes. It's not like RJs is going to home-make their pasta. Just stick to the good dishes at RJs and you'll at least enjoy the food.
I'm the type of person who goes to most restaurants for a specific dish because usually restaurants only offer a few good options unless you're paying for it. So if any of the pros I listed above appeal to you, then RJs is worth it.

| Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | Ambiance: | | | | Way over rated | | By John Calhoun on 5/19/2008 | We live in EI year round, originally from the NY tristate area. Have been to RJs a few times and just am not that impressed. Why would anyone wait am hour or wait at all, for that matter? I agree its very applebees like.
The bathrooms are disgusting, which to me tells a lot about a restaurant. The hostesses were pleasant, our server was great. I had a drink which was way way overpriced for a 6 oz martini glass. Its just an ok place. I think there are much better restaurants in Cape carteret and Salter path. Just my opinion. I would not stay if I had to wait for a table!

| Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | Ambiance: | | | | Take it from another year round resident. | | By Bluewater on 5/16/2008 | I have been living here for a while and have always heard from everyone that RJ's is the place to eat. Tried it a few time and was never impressed with it. The last trip we waited 25 minutes for a seat then another half hour for someone to get our drinks and take our order, after i went to the manager. The steak my fathger had was fatty and overccoked. Crab cake my wife had was more filler than crab and taste about like it. Being from MD I would be happy to show them how they are supposed to be made. One of the specails they had was a Chicken carbonara. It consisted of a pregrilled chicken patty, flavorless alfrado sauce and overcooked noodles. If your at the beach qand don't feel like driving to Morehead or Jacksonville to hit applebee's or ruby tuesday's, then RJ is ok but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there. The one thing i can say is they have really good side salads. If it had just been one bad meal i could have forgiven it but out of the half dozen times i've gone I can't say any of it was memorable. | |

I did however hear that the food was great. So I thought it would be a great place to take my brother and his wife when they came to town. Our party of four all ordered different meals and nothing about it was special, more the same old prepackaged stuff you can get anywhere. I wouldn't waste your time on a ''special'' night out but might be a good place for a quick lunch.

Everybody in our party enjoyed their respective orders. The appetizers were hot and tasty and the salads fresh and flavourfull. Service was excellent. Kudo's to Mark and his staff for being very attentive to all of our needs. Explanations of menu items and recommendations of popular house specialties were bang on. A special touch was taken when the chef prepared a taste of fried calamari which was outstanding in it's crispiness and very tender. They should put together a complimenting sauce. Friendly and efficient service. Highly recommended.

Rucker Johns is one of the best restaurants on the island. The seafood is fresh, not prepackaged. My favorite entree is the BBQ skewered shrimp. They have bacon wrapped around them and then they are grilled. Warning though, this restaurant can get VERY busy. The earlier you go the better.

I have driven 2 hours just to eat there. I've never had a bad experience, and I've been going since I was a teenager. The food and croissants are awesome! You have to try the Hot bacon honey mustard dressing!! I can't beleive anyone would give a bad review for this restaurant...they must need another vacation.

It seemed as if they did not have enough help to assist all of the people in the restraunt. I thought Rucker John's had a very smokey and chaotic environment with everyone running around dazed and confused. The wait for our table was forty-five minutes so we decided to sit at a table by the bar and order drinks while we waited. The table we sat at had not yet been cleaned so we waited patiently for someone to come out and clean it off and take our order. It took twenty minutes for the manager to finally come and get someone to clean off the table and get our drinks. The waitress we had was definitely in a daze and had a hard time handling all of the business. When we were seated to have dinner the service improved but it still felt like we were sitting in the middle of a circus. The food we were served was alright, but it was not worth all of stress it took to get there.

Myself and many friends enjoy driving 30 mins to enjoy this restuarant. The staff is awesome, as well as the food. I have not tasted anything on the menu that wasn't. My personal favorites are the crab cakes as well as the Jack Daniel's steak. I would recommend this restuarant to anyone.

I am surprised at bad reviews. We go here almost every week. The staff is great and so is the food. We can either go expensive on a meal or inexpensive on a meal. They have great variety. The croissants are great and we really like the chicken fingers, especially with the honey mustard. They are better than other places. One time our wait was long for our food and they gave everyone at the table a free dessert. They didn't have to do that. They could have just said sorry but they went above and beyond. We think the staff is great and it is always a clean place to go.

It's just wonderful! | |

I would have to disagree. The food was the same old prepackaged stuff you find at most of the chain restaurants. The only real good part of the meal was the salad.

| 0 of 1 people found this review helpful: | | Wonderful Crab Cakes | | By a Guest Reviewer | My wife will always remember this place. We had been eating shrimp everywhere but her desire was for a good crabcake. Something with lots of real crab and not covered in oil. Well she got her wish and said it was the best crab cakes she has ever eaten. Believe me we've eaten all over the eastern shore of NC.
The one downside and I think it was at least that day. They had a huge party come in so it took quite a while to get service. But our waitress was very upset and knew things were not right. So she called the manager over for us. They ended up giving us a meal free even though we hadn't asked for

| 0 of 1 people found this review helpful: | | It's alright | | By a Guest Reviewer | | There are several dishes on the menu that are original and wonderful but for the most part it's the same old thing. Fried chicken tenders, steak, seafood. And it can be a little pricey. But hey, if you do go, you will love the croissants. They are fabulous. And try the Jack Daniel's steak. They have a deck that overlooks the canal out back but it faces a bunch of apartments and in the last few years the water in the canal isn't very good. It's fun to feed the turtles though | |

| 0 of 1 people found this review helpful: | | Very Average Fare | | By a Guest Reviewer | | The food at Ruckerjohns was very mediocre. I was hoping for so much more, but the sauce on my pasta tasted like it came from a jar. The service was great, but you can get food that tastes the same for a lot less money at the supermarket. | |
