| Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | Ambiance: | | | | By Molly on 10/8/2011 | | Excellent food, great service and atmosphere. I LOVE the original pan fried flounder in Charleston and Captn Pete's was better than some of the other copycats in Chas. Waitress was great, atmosphere was nice, but casual enough for the beach. | |

| 1 of 1 people found this review helpful: | | Value: | | Service: | | Food: | | | Ambiance: | | | | Never again and sad about it! | | By Guest on 7/31/2011 | We have been visiting Holden beach since 2002 and chose early on to make Captain Pete's our one choice for an evening out to dinner. We have had several excellent experiences with the food, service, atmosphere and friendly nature of the staff. July 29th was very different. We arrived at 7:20 pm and had a party of 6 in tow. We were greeted after a 5 minute wait by the downstairs hostess. She told us the wait for 6 would be 45 minutes to one hour. Having had great food and service on all of our earlier visits we decided to wait. After 45 minutes one of your party went to check status. He was told it will be another 30 minutes. No problem, we decided to get a drink and wait. 30 minutes later we are again told the wait will be 30 minutes. So we wait. 30 minutes later..... another 30 minutes? Now it is almost 9:00 and we are hungry and put off. We decide to leave and as we are getting in the car, our name is shouted out the front door. OK, so we decide the food is worth it and the service will be too. Upstairs we find a total of 5 EMPTY tables! 3 that seat 6, 1 that seats 4 and 1 that seats 2. 22 of the seats are on one side and we are told they had a large party and the seats all ''just cleared'' . We had been sitting outside and did not see a party of greater than 6 leave for almost an hour. We sit and hear the specials and place drink orders. Bread and dipping sauce is served and all is well. We do ask for a few minutes to allow our family members who have not experienced Captain Pete's before to look over the menu and we make suggestions. Orders are placed at 9:10 for 6 entrees. We are finally served our entrees at 10:10. An hour to do 6 entrees while the place was 1/4 empty? Remember the 24 empty seats we found when we came upstairs? Food arrives in 3 rounds with almost another 10 minutes between the first and last. First the good news, the Fried Grouper, Crab Cakes and Jumbo Fried Shrimp are all very good to excellent and well received by our family members. Those of us ''in the know'' all ordered the Shrimp and Grits. A past favorite to be sure. This time the sauce was salted to the point that it could not be eaten. The grit cakes were all under cooked to the point they were soggy and cool in the center. I spoke to our sever who did offer to '' have them re-done''. By now it is almost 10:30 and knowing it took them an hour to do the entrees last time, we decided to rinse the shrimp off and skip the sauce and grits. After getting the bill ( almost $300 total with NO alcohol), we ask to see the manager. The lower bar keep ( Mike ? ) arrives and will not even allow us to finish a sentence before he cuts us off with ''we had a large party'', '' the kitchen got backed up'' and other excuses. At no point in time did we ask for any recompense. None was offered. My wife finally had to stop him in mid excuse and ask him to allow her to finish a sentence. We will never return to this establishment. Sad as they were so good before. No change in management was evident so the folks who have always been so warm and service oriented are now cold and not interested in their customer's feedback. | |

The food is always good, but I don't think it's anything special, especially considering the price. Their desserts are probably the best feature -- the Banana Dilly always makes us chuckle, but it's delicious. The waitress this past visit wasn't all that friendly, but I don't recall ever having an issue before.
I think they would do well to expand their menu a bit -- one guy came in wanting a sandwich and they sent him to another restaurant. It seems like they should have some options for people who aren't necessarily looking for a big meal, especially those coming with large groups where it's often difficult to please everyone with a limited menu.

Their seared tuna dinner changed our perspective on tuna. Their creativity and quality focus make it an absolute delight to dine and make it a must every time we visit the beach. Service as usual was great, nice amount of attention without instrusiveness. This is a first class restaurant and one well worth the wait.

Be prepared to wait; our expected time was 1 and a half hours. But it was closer to two and a half.
The waterway setting makes it enjoyable though. There were 25 or 30 people waiting outside by the water (and it's ok to bring drinks out from the bar).
Once inside, you'll know why the wait is necessary. The actual dining room is quite small.
The staff was great; even when putting up with not so patient people.
The dinner was very good and priced within reason.
Again, don't come if you're not willing to wait. The hostess will give her best estimate, but it is an estimate. Relax, you are on vacation.

Sean (bartender) is excellent, and the food (once you get a table) is even moreso! The bar is always busy with lots of locals chatting, and leads itself to mingling between locals and tourists.
The husband/wife team that run this place have certainly taken things ''up a notch''. If you don't see it on the menu, try asking -- I rarely eat anything off the menu, and have never once been dissapointed in the 20+ visits over the years.

| 2 of 2 people found this review helpful: | | excellent fare | | By a Guest Reviewer | | the best non-traditional (ie: not fried) fare on the beach. ambiance is a bit stark but the great service more than compensates! also, has a surprisingly good wine selection considering the location! | |
